“When you show them the evidence right then and there on Lumi saying: ‘This is what it’s come back with, it’s clear to both of us what the substance is’, it makes it easier to interact with them.”

The Lumi Nano is a handheld, portable near-infrared spectroscopy device weighing 250g. It has an OLED screen for status and battery info, with single-button operation. Powered by a 2400mAh rechargeable battery, it performs up to 1000 scans per charge and stays on standby for 3 months. Users can easily calibrate the device with a white reference puck, guided by the Lumi app. The device uses secure Bluetooth 5.2 for encrypted data transfer, and no data is stored on the device or app. Built for durability, it’s IP65 compliant, featuring Gorilla Glass 3, and comes with a 12-month warranty.

Lumi Drug Scan allows officers to screen suspected drug items directly on the street. Using the Lumi Nano device, officers can scan items through clear plastic packaging, eliminating the need to open packages and reducing exposure risks. After entering case details and taking a photo of the item, Lumi captures a spectral scan that is securely analyzed in the cloud using advanced drug detection algorithms. Results are delivered almost instantly within the app, and a summary report is automatically emailed to the officer. This helps maintain sample integrity and speeds up decision-making in the field.

The Lumi Analysis app, available for iOS and Android, is deployed securely via B-2-B and isn’t visible in public app stores. Co-designed with police, it streamlines the process of analyzing suspected drugs. With enterprise authentication, organizations control access, allowing staff to log in using existing credentials. The app records event details, including item descriptions, photos, and system data such as time, geolocation, and device info. After completing an analysis, the system automatically generates and emails a summary report, which can be filed or disclosed as needed.

Lumi uses Microsoft Azure for secure data management. All operational data is stored within Australia’s Eastern region, ensuring compliance with chain of custody requirements and within approved jurisdictions. Data is encrypted both in transit and at rest, with no analysis data stored on the Lumi Nano device or mobile app. Regular backups are taken, with point-in-time restoration available for seven days and long-term retention for ten years. Lumi is deployed on a secure, highly available Azure Kubernetes Cluster, ensuring zero downtime updates. Independent security tests have been completed, meeting both NZ and Australian standards for data security.

Comprehensive training is provided, including in-person courses, how-to guides, and an e-learning module. Users can access an online help site with troubleshooting information directly from the Lumi Analysis app. A full knowledge base is available for IT support desk staff to offer Tier 1 support. ESR uses ServiceNow to manage user incidents and can integrate with a customer’s existing system for seamless support.
